Combining university & work is easy at Cloudflight
In his high school times, as he was studying software engineering, Lukas really enjoyed participating in coding contests. He did very well and won a handful of prizes. And one of the prizes forged his early career. When he competed in the Cloudflight Coding Contest in Vienna he took the 3rd place and an offer to join Cloudflight.
Since then, Lukas joined us three times for an internship and after his civil service he has continued as a part-timer, while attending university. He really appreciates that he can plan his work around the university schedule and work from home anytime. His project work, where he used technologies like Jupyter, pandas, NumPy, also helped him in his studies and with his master thesis
Adding value to a space project
As a software engineer in the Grasp project, Lukas enables a team of scientists to study climate phenomena, like aerosols in the atmosphere, by leveraging satellite data. He tackles an interesting problem: how to speed up calculations with such a huge amount of data being constantly generated by various satellites?
His work is not just about coding. To be successful, he has to study extensive documentation about the operation of the satellites and understand relevant mathematical and astronomical procedures (e.g., distance of the Sun from the Earth affecting the amount of light which influences the results). He creates an architecture that automates repetitive tasks and enables reuse of already developed parts. Only then he can start coding new functionalities, like filtering out cloudy pictures or sun glints.
With lots of support from his onboarding buddies and mentoring from expert colleagues, Lukas grown from an intern in the space segment to a developer, who is now involved in many projects involving satellite data. It is exciting to imagine what Lukas will achieve in the future, so we are super stoked to be on this path together.
