People Success Story: Peter

Finding balance at Cloudflight

There are incredible stories behind the paths that lead to where we are now. Before Peter joined Cloudflight, he was a competitive gamer, a runner and an accomplished software engineer with over a decade of experience. He was also a CEO and founder of TeamSpeak. Yes, THE TeamSpeak.

Booting up

When Peter was a kid, he loved everything computer. He avidly played computer games, coded his own software, and constantly learned new ways to improve his skills. For example, he programmed an application to test his D&D character builds in QBasic, but as he needed to test more and more, the language was not fast enough. So, he learned C. He was quite ahead of his peers, so when he was 16, he got an offer to attend a few university courses. Not only was it a great experience for him, but it was also pretty good for the regular university students who sat next to him during final exams, because they could copy all his correct answers.

After graduating from high school, he went to a university in Karlsruhe. Besides studying he spent a lot of time on competitive gaming. His teammates used TeamSpeak for communication, but it had no Linux version at that time. Naturally, he wanted to complain to the developer, so they connected on IRC. He found out that the developer was actually working on a Linux version, which Peter got to test. One thing led to another, and he got an offer to join in and created a two-man team. It did not take long, and they founded an official TeamSpeak GmbH together.

Restarting

Fast forward several years of hard work, dedication and a lot of commercial success, Peter was leading TeamSpeak as a CEO. For many people running a successful company would be the ultimate career goal, but eventually he started to look for a change in his life. A new challenge. After months of preparations, he left the company and decided to attend a university again, from the start. This time studying was quite easy for him, with over a decade of coding experience under his belt, so he finally had enough time to socialise, do a lot of sports and make new friends.

In 2019 Peter discovered Cloudflight and joined as a Data scientist. He got absolutely absorbed in his new role. He thought about his work in the office, at home, when he jogged. His natural gifts and tenacious learning ethics coupled with our culture of knowledge sharing propelled him to become one of our top experts in the area of NLP.

Currently he works in a project that tackles data processing from the ever-increasing amount of paper invoices in the health industry. It is not only the challenge of learning new skills and smart colleagues that keep him enjoying his role, but also its flexibility. Every week he only works 20 hours to keep enough time for his hobbies and side projects. Peter found a perfect balance at Cloudflight and we got a brilliant mind in exchange.
