Journey to space and Cloudflight
Originally from the sunny European country of Spain, Laura has always been drawn by the unknown, by exploration and discovery. After finishing her bachelor’s degree in engineering, she took up an internship in California, US, to deepen her knowledge of ways to measure the land, but quickly realized that this routine work was not right for her. She returned to Spain to study for her master’s degree, this time specializing in remote sensing (with satellites!) and a passion was born.
Laura joined a private company to work in her first real projects in the space industry and as it is often the case in small businesses, she had to wear many hats – requirements engineering, data validation, sales, customer meetings, project management. These projects were done for the European Space Agency, and it is common that they are done in so called consortiums – multiple companies working together. This is where Laura discovered Cloudflight and met her future colleagues. She enjoyed working with them, so it was an easy decision, when she was looking for her next professional challenge.
Growing career in the space industry
The space industry is incredibly dynamic and growing exponentially. It takes a special kind of resilient personality to thrive in a challenging environment like this, but it is exactly what drives Laura. And best of all she can really make an impact. Through her work in the recent BeatIt project, we can now not only discover bark beetle infestation in our forests using satellite data, but thanks to a smart use of artificial intelligence and machine learning we can predict how it will spread, enabling a timely and cost-effective measures to be taken against the beetle spread.
In 2021 Laura has attended the International Astronautical Congress in Dubai, UAE, as a next step on her way to further develop her career. With almost a decade of experience in the space industry, she is now in the perfect position to become an expert business developer and Cloudflight is there to support her fully in reaching her career ambitions. Laura was able to secure promising leads in Dubai and already eyes the next congress in Paris. We are really proud of Laura’s achievements and could not be more excited to be on the space journey with her.
