The Challenge

Whenever there was a car coming in for repair at a garage, employees had to open each case individually before searching for the spare parts to order: the first challenge was making this process digital and, at the same time, easy and fast to a staff that often has a low digital affinity.

Birner needed us to reduce workload and replace error-prone manual tasks with the goal of easy data entry from car registration documents at the garage into an existing Birner platform. We had to achieve this without storing any data, conforming to GDPR guidelines.

The project had to go live within six months, and it needed to include both a web and a mobile application.

The Solution

Making information available fast and simply

We decided to use NLP to handle all types of car license documents for data entry and relieve employees of cumbersome tasks by storing the data in a QR code (which will be put onto the car) for the future.

The result was a responsive application that enables the processing of images within seconds, even with low image quality. The user can then confirm or amend the data in a GUI before generating the QR code and sending the extracted information to the existing Birner platform.

The system then prints the QR code, which can be affixed to the car: the information is then always at hand every time a car comes into the garage. This translates into less administrative effort for the repair shop, and Birner becoming a customer-friendly digital pioneer.

For Birner’s end-users, our system means having the certainty that the right thing has been ordered: the process is less prone to errors and ultimately more convenient. It also means that, even if the owner of the vehicle forgets the car registration documents, they can still do everything because the QR is either on or in the vehicle.
