Building data-driven fish farms for Blue Planet Ecosystems
Creating a sustainable fish farming system in cities on the countryside and within desert areas with the help of sunlight and the Internet of Things

From hardware to application
Solar energy, water, algae, and plankton – that’s all that Blue Planet Ecosystems needs to breed fish in a completely automated process. We offer a complete solution starting from hardware until the final application, thereby enabling end-to-end steps in all project phases. With IoT (a hardware/software ecosystem), the system is remotely monitored and controlled, as well as continuously optimized in the process.
The challenge
Delivering value amidst changing requirements
Blue Planet Ecosystems is a start-up that needs one thing: speed.
In the face of ever-changing costumer requirements, agility is key. There is also no vendor lock-in, and one of the major drivers of the project was how to obtain IoT data as platform-independent as possible and extensible for anyone who needs to use it.
We led two projects for Blue Planet Ecosystems. The first challenge was that the client already had control systems based upon Raspberry Pi in their local network, but the system often failed, and data was lost.
Therefore, the goal was to have a fail-safe, reliable control system.
The second project was about how to handle data. Our team prepared an IoT platform approach. We didn’t want to write software that simply receives and transmits data – because there are already relatively many ready-made platforms. So, we focused on building on top of existing services.
The context
A sustainable & energy-efficient system
BPE creates a source of sustainable seafood in urban and desert environments through a data-driven approach. Some of the requirements are to use minimal amounts of water, to use solar power when available, and to optimize energy-intensive operations
We, therefore, collect and process data that accurately represents all the different processes going on in the tanks so that we can then train an AI upon it that optimizes these processes.
In an inner control cycle, we observe the temperature in the tank and manage the heating. In an extended cycle, the fish can be video monitored. Using AI, they can be tracked, so that the start-up can intervene in time if the fish are sick.
The solution
Thinking along and preparing the process from sensor to web application
We have built the premise for the entire fish breeding processes to ensure that the data is complete and accurate, and the overall system is versatile.
We rely upon existing Cloud services for generic IoT components such as device management. With this public cloud IoT layer, hardware monitoring the fish tank, and our tailored software components to implement the highly specific control circles, we have achieved a cost-efficient as well as future-proof foundation.
