Cloud Trends 2024 by Cloudflight

Cloud Trends 2024 by Cloudflight

As the digital landscape of our world evolves, it’s increasingly apparent that cloud computing is at the core of this evolution. As 2024 looms over the horizon, understanding emerging cloud trends is paramount for any IT decision-maker.

Here, we delve deeper into what the next year holds for the world of cloud computing.

In 2023 we already saw IoT capabilities in production becoming important, in manufacturing plants — a topic that will become more relevant in 2024. Hybrid cloud and cloud native thus enter the spotlight even more this year, and we’ll see manufacturers will leverage cloud native setups to get the most value out of that combination.

Cloud Native, Edge Computing and IoT Meet AI

We started 2023 with IoT as main trend. As the year progressed and AI’s mainstream adoption accelerated thanks ChatGPT spreading like wildfire, it became clearer that an integration of AI within the cloud resulted in an advantage when it came to running applications.

More specifically, it enhances user experience and makes data easier to handle and interpret. On a technical level, Industrial IoT and Smart Consumer Goods lead the charge both in B2C and B2B thanks to the cloud + AI combination.

Edge computing emerges as the beacon in this scenario, bringing the promise of agility and precision. More specifically:

  • It greatly reduces latency by processing data locally (within the device) enabling real-time decision-making – a key element in critical sectors like healthcare or autonomous vehicles, where it has become a requirement.
  • It optimizes bandwidth by processing data at the source and transmitting only the essentials, significantly reducing network traffic. This not only saves costs but also ensures that the network remains uncluttered, facilitating smoother operations.

Along with edge computing, the cloud native landscape for 2024 wouldn’t be complete without mentioning serverless computing: On the operational front, developers can concentrate solely on crafting code and honing application functionalities. The server upkeep, scaling, maintenance and resource allocation are handled automatically, leading to faster deployments and iterations. Financially, the pay-as-you-use model ensures resources are utilized judiciously, eliminating wastage and ensuring cost-effective operations.

2024 is the year of cloud native. But before you lean back on your seat and reject this notion, let me complete the sentence:

Based on all of the above, it’s safe to say 2024 is the year of cloud native as an enabler.

Multi- and Poly-Cloud: A Paradigm Shift

Relying on a single cloud provider is no more. Today, diversification is the name of the game. Before we get into it, we can’t avoid clarifying the difference between the two:

  • Multi-Cloud is when you use the same service from different Cloud Providers to avoid a Vendor-Lockinge.g. Use a Kubernetes Cluster from AWS and from Azures.
  • On the other hand, PolyCloud is when a specific service is used by the respective cloud provider. For example, the CRM system can be used by Azure and the financial solution can be hosted in AWS at the same time.

Polycloud is a cloud computing model that uses a combination of on-premises, private cloud, and public cloud resources. It is a cloud approach that uses different types of cloud services that are hosted onto various clouds. Polycloud is the strategy of using multiple cloud providers across your organization, where you choose the one best suited to a particular project. While multicloud is about using multiple cloud providers in a cloud-agnostic manner, polycloud is about using specialized capabilities of multiple cloud providers.

Data & AI/ML: The Cloud’s Cognitive Leap

Without data, any artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) aspiration is pointless – that’s why you need a data strategy. A proper Data Strategy should also include Data Governance aspects.
To be specific: A Data strategy without having a Data Governance Strategy is pointless and will not create business value. This is the case becuause Data Governance deals how data is organised, managed and processed and stored, while Data strategy is focused on how an organization will use data to generate value. It answers the question of what the company will do with the data to be more successful. Data governance concerns itself with an effective framework for managing data policy and processes, data meaning, and relationships. A data governance strategy provides a framework that connects people to processes and technology, assigns responsibilities, and makes specific stakeholders accountable for specific data domains. It creates the standards, processes, and documentation structures for how the organization will collect and manage data.

As for the hype of the moment – artificial intelligence and machine learning – they are no longer auxiliary. As mentioned, in 2024 they will become central to the cloud’s evolution. Their convergence promises intelligent automation, sharper predictive analytics, and a user experience that’s genuinely intuitive. Multimodal AI is also on the horizon, meaning the combination of text, audio, image and video outputs and inputs in one single tool.

AI/ML, with its need for vast computational resources, finds a perfect ally in the cloud. AI-driven analytics, recommendation engines, and automation tools will become more ubiquitous, powered by the cloud’s scalability. Moreover, the cloud ecosystem will simplify AI adoption, offering pre-trained models and platforms, making AI/ML integration more accessible even to those without deep expertise. In the B2C environment, we can already see an example of this with the recent launch of OpenAI’s GPT Store, which makes configuring GPTs easy for everyone with or without technical AI knowledge.

This, combined with an effective data strategy will make AI and ML serving as tools for managing architecture and fostering the creation of new applications and features through low-code platforms.

What To Expect This Year

Despite everything going on in the world currently, with new armed conflicts or the threat of them popping up every few weeks somewhere in the world, you would be tempted to think: Let’s leave the status quo as it is, and let’s not push for digital transformation that much anymore.

Flash news, it won’t be successful. For years now we’ve had disruption after disruption as new technologies came to life. In 2024, you can expect all the breakthroughs we’ve lived through these last decade to come together.

AI will keep advancing rapidly.

Technologies will merge, integrating even more into our life.

For companies in every industry, this means that technology will become even more a vector of cost savings, better and faster employee performance, and better solutions provided to customer.

So, if you look at it from this perspective, digitally transforming your company stops looking like a daunting task with attached a significant budget allocation. It starts becoming one of the most necessary investments you can make not only to keep your company competitive, but to maintain the customer loyalty that drives every business forward.

With that in mind, we wish you a successful 2024. May all your digital projects succeed.
