Navigating the Data River

We all like to spend our free time differently. Some look for a bit of an adrenaline rush and might take a kayak onto the open sea to a remote island for an exhilarating remote camping experience. Some would rather peacefully watch birds and go to a zoo for monthly lectures. Others would just stay in the comfort of their homes and build one of the hundreds of Lego sets they have in the just-Lego-dedicated room. Or you are Nynke, and you love doing all these things. And much, much more.

A Unique Path into Technology

Nynke has always been a creative person, so she chose to study liberal arts as her first university experience. However, just a few years later, her true calling revealed itself in psychology and later neuroscience. Her master’s degree had her deeply engaged with data analysis, model building, and statistical models. It wasn’t long before Nynke was writing her own custom software to support her PhD research, focusing on spatial perception and multisensory combinations. This exploration laid the groundwork for her future in data science.

After defending her dissertation, Nynke joined the fast-paced world of technology as a data scientist. Several years later, Nynke saw Cloudflight’s ad for a “full stack data scientist”, a perfect match to her unique background. After joining, she quickly took on the role of team lead, contributing her expertise to projects focusing on automated document processing, topic modeling and knowledge graph generation for both external and internal customers.

Constructing Knowledge with INBP

In her current work on the Initiative Nationale Bildungsplattform (National Education Platform) (INBP), Nynke can use her creativity, logic, and technological ability. Tasked with building software that can simplify study books into key topics, relationships, and hierarchies, she has been at the forefront of developing innovative methods for data extraction. Utilizing language models and syntactic extraction, her team has trained specialized models to filter and structure information. It’s a modern-day alchemy of transforming unstructured data into knowledge graphs, all geared toward helping students learn more effectively.

Nynke sees her future firmly in the tech world. The autonomy, non-hierarchical structure, and project ownership she enjoys at Cloudflight align perfectly with her philosophy. Her specialization in NLP, coupled with her background in neuroscience, also opens new intriguing possibilities in computer vision. Nynke’s story is truly a testament to what happens when curiosity meets innovation, and we are extremely proud to have her on our team.
